Some Marginalia
In the spring of 2023, while finishing my English degree at UC Berkeley, I took a course that shifted the way I view the written word. The History of the Hand-Printed Book in its Historic Context, taught by Inge Bruggeman, immersed me in letterpress printing. Our class collaborated to produce an edition of unpublished poems by Jessica Hagedorn, from typesetting to binding. I came to it with no understanding of its present place in the world. Growing up low-income, letterpress seemed a distant, inaccessible art. That changed quickly. I was swept in.
After graduating, I interned with the CODEX Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the art of the book, trading work for press hours, and completing my first chapbook of poetry, Fragments of Spring.
I am now working towards opening a micropress to create art I view as essential to the times we’re living in — carefully constructed and attentive to the realities we find ourselves in.
